GWLA is a dynamic week long workshop giving young women of color, between the ages of 17-23, access to mentoring sessions with female executives of color in various industries in NYC. Tell us who you are! What's your mission/vision? I’m a Midwest girl who loves a good book, glass of wine, and an adventure! I’m currently learning to be ok with being a work in progress, and finding the beauty in every struggle. Last year, someone mentioned she was a black woman in beta, and that has become my motto!
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? I read a study recently, which showed minorities spending the most time on social media. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been aware of how black women are portrayed in the media. Being a black woman in social media means everything to me, because I get to help change the broken narrative of black women in America. When working on campaigns, I make sure that we’re represented. It’s important that our stories are being told, and are being told correctly. This is extremely important because I know young black girls are consuming a lot of this content. Also, billions of people use social media daily, and are consuming content that can have a detrimental effect on their mental health. Even though I work in social media, I also encourage people to take social media breaks. Use that time to engage with people IRL, and dive deeper into your passions!
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life? I remember being really late to my first class, due to train delays. Since Zumba is only an hour long, I thought it would be pointless for me to attend and decided to cancel. When I called, I remember Lindsay picking up the phone and she was so welcoming! She told me F4D was a different type of studio, and didn’t care if you were late. She still encouraged me to come and dance with them! I arrived during “level up” and at the end Laci came and danced with me. She asked me my name, and welcomed me to the studio. Since that day I’ve been hooked! Laci is the TRUTH. I’ve never met someone who genuinely cares about everyone that comes to their studio. Laci is like my big sister, and I’m so grateful for her friendship. I’m so thankful for this wonderful community, and culture, Laci has created. No matter what I’m going through, when I walk through those doors, I’m greeted with love from so many beautiful smiling faces. I’m an introvert, and F4D has definitely helped me come out of my shell. Thanks Laci, and thanks ladies of the F4D community, for showing me what girl power in real life looks like!

As I continue on this journey, I look forward to the opportunity to bring other women along with me. As a children's book author, it means representation. I'm a spanish womxn. I'm a music composer and sound designer/mixer for film.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you?
It's a tough industry to be a womxn. I've always felt that because of being a woman I wasn’t good with music technology and stuff like that. I feel proud of doing what i do.

Current Job title: Partner at Vinson & Elkins LLP, a global law firm. I focus on private equity investments and mergers & acquisitions, particularly involving infrastructure and energy assets. I lead teams that structure and execute investments and corporate transactions and help our clients anticipate and navigate business and legal issues throughout the life cycle of those investments.
anything exciting you'd like to share: I am taking a leap of faith in my career and, in the coming weeks, will be pivoting to a new role that I hope will allow me to marry my business and legal counseling experience and to grow/stretch outside my comfort zone.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? As a black woman equity partner in “Biglaw,” and particularly one who specializes in private equity and M&A in New York, I’m often described literally as a “unicorn.” It is immensely disappointing (to say the least) that moving the needle in diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession and “Biglaw” in particular remains such an intractable challenge despite the numerous calls to action, pledges and investments over decades. I remain committed to doing my part to advance those goals and recognize that my very presence in the room — occupying my seat at the table and using my voice both to lead successful deals and to push for a continued focus on diversity, equity and inclusion — are powerful signals, particularly for the pipeline of women of color coming up the ranks.
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life? Fit4Dance is my therapy at the end of a long and stressful day or week. Laci and the Fit4Dance community have been — and remain — a wonderful source of support and inspiration and I always leave the studio re-energized. As Laci says at the end of each class, we are all “winners!” I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Fit4Dance community.
Current Job title(s) : Licensed Social Worker for the Dept of Education
I'm passionate about youth development. It's super cliche, but young people are our future. Being that person who gets to see young people grow & develop into young adults is indescribable. Crazy enough yesterday I had a moment that can describe why I do what I do! One of my 1st students had a rocky start, but a switch went off & she made a shift. She was in the office daily asking about what she needed to do to make sure she graduated. She was the student you wished you always had. Now we fast forward to 2020. She'll be graduating from Brooklyn College in May & she's currently working full time as an advocate counselor for the program she graduated from. SOOOO here's the moment. Her office is now the very same office that I use to see her in. She is literally following in my footsteps but doing it her way! As a social worker you don't always get to see the labor of your work w/ young people. I feel so blessed that I get to see some of my work first hand. To see her reaching her goals & becoming this awesome woman before my eyes is truly amazeballs! I'm also feeling old as dirt...LOL! She's one of the reasons why I love social work & will continue working w/ young people!
My mission is to Live Life on Purpose! Living life ON purpose means you are choosing to live life until the wheels fall off! You're purposely making decisions that'll make how you live this life more fulfilling. You aren't allowing life's circumstances to dictate how you life your life. You want to learn a new language,do it! You want to volunteer w/youth,do it! You want to get your master's/ PhD,do it!! I learned this when I decided to get my doctorate.I purposely chose to do something that was scary, beyond difficult, & so necessary for me. I learned so much about myself during the process. One of the most important things I learned was that I could seriously cripple myself w/ doubt, but I was capable of lifting myself out of that space if I remembered that I made this choice through prayer & research. If God said you got it, then I said Cool, let's do it.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? Basically, I'm a superhero! Working in a NYC HS as a social worker you have to be...LOL! There are 2200 students in my school and I'm responsible for a good chuck of them. I know that some of my students are coming from environments that may not be the greatest, so I make sure to be that one consistent positive person in their life.
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life? Fit4Dance has been AMAZEBALLS!!! I have always used dance as my form of exercise for weightloss and maintaining. Having Fit4Dance has enhance my life immensely! I can dance EVERYDAY!!! I have met women that share my love for dance. I get to hang out with a good friend more because we take some of the same classes. I just have this overall sense of happiness...even when I'm a hot sweaty mess. My Yelp review says it all! Check it out!
Job title: Senior Court Clerk
Passion: I am passionate about being thoughtful and kind to those I am surrounded by. As people we are all sharing this universal space by traveling through different courses. While some days can be tough and unkind I stay willing in extending gratitude through it all. A small dose of courtesy everyday can have a positive effect for someone who may choose to carry the torch of kindness along.
Who I am: I thought I had my life all figured out as I was in control of the strides I was making. Suddenly circumstances occurred to where I suddenly lost the reigns of how to navigate everyday. I couldn't understand my purpose while questioning God "Why me?" Then I began to alter my way of thinking and asking "Why not me?" I stopped dwelling on the obstacles I faced and shaped my mind into overcoming them. That's when I learned I was built for this struggle. Standing on the shoulders of my ancestors who dealt with so much more propelled me to not become defeated by life's setbacks.
A woman in my line of work: Being a woman in my line of work gives me the opportunity to be compassionate towards others daily. As an employee of the New York State Courts, my career requires me to have constant interaction with the public. People come to court for a variety of reasons, for most it's not an inviting place to be. I prefer to have an overall understanding along with patience to everyone's unique situation that I interact with. In most circumstances once I establish a relatable tone then progress can be structured towards a resolution.
What Fit4Dance means to me: The Fit4Dance community has enhanced my life by providing a place for me in realizing the potential I have to be my best self mentally and physically. The Fit4Dance environment is an amazing addition to my life where I feel comfortable as well as protected amongst a diverse group of women. Thank you Laci for your vision in Fit4Dance and having a positive impact within the community. I pray that Fit4Dance continues on being a driving force unifying women who strives to Fit4Dance.
Current Job Title: Cardiothoracic ICU nurse
Name of Business: I am in the process of applying to nurse anesthesia doctoral programs and also starting a sustainable heritage breed cattle ranch and restaurant out West with my brother!
Tell us who you are! What's your mission/vision?
I am passionate about the interconnected nature of health—that of our planet and the organisms living on it. The earth is rapidly becoming unlivable, and the solution would require a major re-evaluation of land use and agriculture worldwide as well as consumer behavior.
I grew up on an off-the-grid farm in upstate NY, and my vision is to create a business that honors nature, the environment, and our inexorable link to it. This has manifested in a family-run 100% grass fed and grass finished heritage beef ranch that aids in soil rejuvenation while simultaneously building community through food.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? Nursing is a traditionally female-dominated profession. Today, still over 90 percent of nurses report as female. In my field, only 5% of open-heart physicians are women. Nursing has changed significantly over the years, however gender imbalances still exist. A female physician is often perceived as a “nurse” by the patient, while a male nurse is often “doctor”. People frequently assume that as a woman I have more compassion than a man, or am somehow built to be more sensitive, while ignoring the clinical expertise and intelligence necessary to perform my job.
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life?
Fit4Dance is truly amazing! I love this space and this community so much. I wasn’t sure to expect when I first started because I haven’t danced since elementary school but the welcoming, safe, and loving environment keeps me coming back. I know that if I am having a bad day I can come to Fit4Dance and be encapsulated in the magic that happens there. I might be lookin’ crazy most of the time, but I’m always having fun!

Tell us who you are! What's your mission/vision?I seek to create transformative experiences that challenge us to be our best selves and to lead the most fulfilling lives possible. Most of what I do is rooted in the Hip Hop aesthetic and it is my intention to leave no stone unturned when it comes to utilizing art and culture as a tool to make this world a better place. Whether I’m performing or writing, speaking or teaching or leading a meditation I am moved by the desire to use music for healing and change.Fusing beats, live instruments, rap-poetry and guided meditation my music and performance eloquently demonstrate how Hip Hop can be a container for spiritual consciousness. There’s no distinction between my creative process and my activism. One day I realized me staying healthy and sane meant integrating mind-body meditation practices. This made me stronger. What I hope to do in 2020 is finally share that. I intend to do so in a variety of mediums - music and audio, tv/video, live onstage and the written word. I’m a work-in-progress and pray for the discipline and patience to actualize who it is I was meant to become.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? As the first US Hip Hop Ambassador I’m considered a pioneer in education, theater, diplomacy and now spirituality and wellness. Being a woman in Hip Hop whether it was in the music industry, the arts, education or in the non-profit/organizing world has not been easy. Most men have been conditioned in ways that they are not even present to and sometimes subtle forms of sexism can chip away your peace of mind and sense of self-worth. I’ve fallen down into victim mode more often than I care to admit but now when I look at where I am I feel inspired. I’ve done so much healing - still have lots to do but I know that I am on purpose and fulfilling my assignment. I hope to inspire as many girls and women as I can while I’m here in this lifetime!
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life? Oh, Fit4Dance, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: 1)F4D gave me home where I feel safe to be me in all of my quirkiness, my loud and my quiet, my plump phases and my slim phases, when I’m feeling fit and/or when I’m out of shape. 2)The energy at F4D carried me up and out of a severe depression one winter and I’ll forever be grateful for this place. Dance is medicinal. I’m living proof!
3)I’m both and entrepreneur and a sensitive creative. Sometimes I spend a lot of time by myself working, F4D has given me a community to be a part of...it’s like a warm embrace.

I have met so many wonderful women at Fit4Dance and am so grateful for joy it has brought to my life!
Job title: Self-Employed Tutor
I'm passionate about educating and uplifting people. I believe It's important that children know that they are loved so that they don't go looking for love elsewhere. I've seen in so many adults the results of feeling lack of love by their parents, families, friends or others in their lives. Educating the future generations about who they are and why they are great is very important.
My mission is for the future generations to know about their history and themselves in order to make a better future for humanity.
Being a woman in the line of education is very important because women are the ones that the children learn from. We teach them starting in the womb. It's a certain connection that women have with the children and their learning and I feel like I'm giving back by teaching.
Being a member of the Fit4Dance community has made my life so much better. My health has improved drastically. I've lost almost 30 lbs and my breathing has improved. Fot4Dance has been a blessing for my sisters and I. We have found a family here. I am not the most social person but I love being at the studio and I love volunteering to help out for any event. I'm just overjoyed to have met Laci and the other amazing, strong, beautiful women at Fit4Dance. Love you all.

Who am I? How often do we, as women, struggle with the answer to that question? Why? As a hostess of life thru God, our birthright makes us impeccable from the start; I am humble to acknowledge the fact that I am a Phenomenal Woman of God, mother, daughter, niece, Sista-Friend, and more. My mission is to live my best life every day and share it with those I love and dear to my heart; to make each day better than the day before, and to always be grateful and thankful for the unconditional love of God. My vision is to live to be 100+, with a sound mind, body and soul – fierce, vibrant, filled with happiness, joy and peace; to undoubtedly witness and guide my daughters be the most dynamic women on this Earth – bold, brilliant and limitless in every aspect of life ordained by God; and to encourage and inspire others daily.
My definition of being a member of the Fit4Dance community means self-care and self-love. In July 2018, I signed up for a two-week pass with my close friends. We were constantly battling getting to the gym, and so we decided to do something different. Since my first Zumba class, I am dancing daily. My health has optimized immensely. I challenge myself daily to maintain a good balanced diet and at least an hour of physical activity. Easy to do? No, not at all, but definitely doable. At Fit4Dance, I feel inspired to keep going on day after day. As soon as you walk in the door, inspiring instructors and clients surround you. Whether you are there daily or not, you stay connected by the beat of the music and lyrics of the songs. I have lost 25 lbs and am proudly keeping the weight off. My schedule does not permit me to take all the classes, but I am there daily. Trust and believe me, Laci’s energy is contagious!!! I truly do not know how she does it, but I am so thankful that she does. I love my Fit4Dance family! We are unique and equate love in such a dynamic way! We are dancing, healing, and loving each other and ourselves with every single step.

Job Title: Community Organizer
www.southsidecsa.org
IG & Twitter @ryanlachica @southsidecsa
I technically came to NYC as a nanny to write sci-fi comic books. I was so inspired by the community of activists that create in Brooklyn that I settled down and have worked for a variety of non-profits in Brooklyn, as an environmental educator and a tenant organizer. For the past 3 years, I ran a start-up hunger program, the North Brooklyn Angels. Currently working freelance and brainstorming on a new soup kitchen project. As a volunteer project, I run a farm share, the Southside CSA. It is a weekly grassroots farmers market that supports 6 small family farms & a local fisherman. Kinda like a co-op, it works by getting the farmers more of the money for their produce by cutting out the middlemen through volunteer power and the use of a bar backyard space in Williamsburg. The idea is to support these small family farms by giving them guaranteed customers through a subscription service, payment in advance so they can reduce their dependence on bank loans, and community support when there are dramatic issues for farmers like droughts, hurricanes, early freezes and all sorts of problems that can kill a small family business. Because I work with these farmers, I usually have a ton of fresh vegetables & fruit in my bag, and have a hobby of making jams, pickles, and homemade spirits.
UPCOMING - We built a mini greenhouse in our loft last winter. In addition to it being home to a chameleon, we have been experimenting with growing plants. Looking for a workshop space so we can start a little side hustle of plants and custom reptile tanks.
I have always felt if women actually ran the world, we would be able to solve every problem for hunger to war. I want to spend my time and energy building sustainable communities, celebrating beauty and working for peace. I believe in protest marches & community gardens, especially if they are led by women. I am very grateful to be a part of the Fit4Dance community. I don't live in the neighborhood but followed Laci around the city after experiencing the magic that is her Zumba class. Through her studio and the community of women who teach there, I have gained the power of dance. Life can be stressful, but music, dance, and the strength of a community of woman, any day and mood can be transformed and empowered.
Job titles: Educator; Professor of Italian Studies
I research/write about gender, race and sexuality, immigration, activism and the we use art, movies, books and movement in our fight to make this world livable for all. I also cook, dance and organize benefit dinners local non-profits (keep your eyes open for an upcoming event at Fit4Dance!)
We women face a lot of stereotypes, and those are very present in the education sector. People often expect you to be mother, friend, caregiver, flirt AND teacher. I have taught at a lot of different levels: university, preschool, night school. I have taught a lot of different things: cinema, literature, writing, cooking, reading, history, Italian language, ESL. In every instance I find people expect me to give them all of my time and energy and my impulse is to say yes. It can be hard to remember that we need to keep something for ourselves; giving everything all the time can be exhausting and dangerous, it can leave you empty and tired. I have to advocate for my own space and balance in a way that my male colleagues never do.
Fit4Dance is one of the ways I remind myself to keep something for me. I love teaching, I love helping, I love giving, but I need strength for all that! Fit4Dance fuels my body and soul! When I'm feeling low I come dance my blues away.

Worked in Accounts Receivable for 18 yrs. After working 17 years at a company: my department was outsourced. After being laid off for 4 months, I currently work at an employment agency. However, my passion is entertaining. I love performing. I have enjoyed hosting various events and I also enjoy acting. I have performed at various venues with the Christian Cultural Center Drama Ministry. And I even wrote and performed a one woman show that I am revamping for a production this summer. I studied theatre at Hampton University. Entertaining is my happy place. When I'm performing not only am I escaping my own issues, but I give others a few minutes or hours of an escape as well. I know it is my obligation to use my gifts that God has blessed me with to serve and bless others!
Fit4Dance helps me in so many ways. Not only do the classes help challenge and enhance my body physically, but the positivity of each teacher and the other classmates changes that dance studio into a mystical magical safe haven. I've witnessed women of all ages, sizes and shades find their beauty, sensuality and sexiness in themselves and in others. The beautiful sassy confident woman I see in the mirrors of 778 Nostrand Avenue is slowly but surely becoming the woman walking these streets on a daily. It's a gradual transformation, a slow journey but a definite destination! I'm extremely grateful for the relationships I've acquired while be being there. It's also spiritual growth for me. Gratitude and consistent blessings flow fluidly in that space. I don't go as often as I'd like but it is a necessity in order to rejuvenate myself when I feel my energy running low. And no matter how long I've been away, I'm always greeted as if I was never gone.

One of my top passions is learning about black cultural production and sharing my knowledge with others so that the creative work of black people are appreciated and rewarded more by both black and non-black people. And, this isn't only about professional artistry, it's about all forms of creativity which include social posts that go "viral" and dances that find themselves used in billion-dollar video games. I can't stand seeing everyone profiting off black creativity except for black creators.
Tell us who you are! What's your mission/vision?
I am a black woman that's constantly in beta. I am always learning, growing, and evolving. I believe in following my curiosity and sharing knowledge. At this point in my life, it's as simple as that.
What does being a woman in your line of work mean to you? All of my roles have to do with learning and sharing information. Being a woman in my profession, specifically in my role in the marketing industry, means that I have to always move in my own best interests and advocate for myself. Being a black woman in my role heightens the amount of self-advocacy that's required to advance. I understand the combination of my gender, race, and age impacts how people receive my work, but I also know that this trifecta of identities can be a source of power because it speaks to a unique life experience that others think they understand, but really don't. In my work, across all my roles, my aim is to open minds, eyes, and hearts with well-researched facts and truths.
How has being a member of the Fit4Dance community enhanced your life? Fit4Dance is self-care for me. I always feel welcomed at Fit4Dance. Going to dance class is a time for me to attempt to shut off my brain and just focus on having fun in the moment whether it's attempting to keep up with Laci's Zumba energy or master the choreography in Nado's Afrobeats class.
